    Digging Deeper

    On September 29, 522 B.C., following two years of bizarre and bloody political intrigue, King Darius I the Great of Persia killed a Magian (think of the magi or wise men of the Bible) usurper, thereby securing Darius’s hold as great king of the Persian Empire.

    On September 29, 1714, Cossacks from the Russian Empire slaughtered 800 Finns on the island of Hailuoto during the Russian invasion of Finland, then part of the Swedish Empire, known as The Great Wrath.

    On September 29, 1758 (New Style Calendar), one of the greatest naval heroes of all time was born, Horatio Nelson, the man that would become Vice Admiral and 1st Viscount Nelson, the hero of Trafalgar.

    On September 29, 1789, the United States Department of War established a regular US Army for the first time, a modest force of only several hundred men.

    On September 29, 1825, American soldier, revolutionary, and farmer Daniel Shays (c.1747–1825) died at age 78 in Sparta, New York.

    On September 29, 1940, the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) experienced the most astounding incident of airplanes colliding in mid-air, becoming locked together, and then safely landing.

    On September 29, 1975, the first Black owned television station in the United States opened for business as WGPR of Detroit, Michigan.

    On September 29, 1982, the first of seven victims of intentionally-contaminated Tylenol died.

    On September 29, 1989, American singer-songwriter and pianist Billy Joel released his song titled “We Didn’t Start the Fire”.

    On September 29, 1990, the prototype jet fighter plane designated YF-22 Raptor, built by a powerful consortium of American airplane manufacturers, Lockheed, Boeing, and General Dynamics, made its maiden flight.

    On September 29, 2011, a special court convened in India convicted a staggering 269 police and government officials of complicity in an atrocity called the “Vachathi case,” including 17 of those convictions for rape.

    On September 29, 2017, the news media were buzzing about the revelation made public by CNN the previous day that not only did the Russians buy targeted Facebook ads in an attempt to influence the 2016 American presidential election, they also posted disinformation posing as Black Lives Matter sympathizers in an effort to create divisive rifts in US race relations.

    On September 29, 2018, the 2018 Australian Football League finals series culminated with the 2018 AFL Grand Final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

    Supernatural horror fans had their chance to be among the first in Cleveland, Ohio to see My Best Friend’s Exorcism on Thursday, September 29th, 2022 at 7:30 PM Eastern!

    On September 29, 2024, we celebrated another National Coffee Day, reveling in our appreciation for that “Cup of Joe,” “Shot of Caffeine,” “Java,” “Go Juice,” or whatever you want to call it.
