On August 1, 1620, the British ship, Speedwell, sailed from Delfshaven along with the Mayflower to bring separatists known as Pilgrims to the New World.
On August 1, 1714, the British people dug deep, really deep, in order to select their next King when Queen Anne died.
On August 1, 1831, the new London bridge spanning the River Thames in central London, was completed.
On August 1, 1911, Harriet Quimby of Michigan became the first woman in the United States to be awarded an Aviator’s Certificate by the Aero Club of America (ACA).

On August 1, 1981, the world of music and television changed forever when MTV made its debut on satellite and cable television, when John Lack announced, “Ladies and Gentlemen, Rock and Roll!”
On Thursday, August 1st, 1991, actress Hedy Lamarr was arrested for shoplifting.
On August 1, 1993, the Great Mississippi and Missouri Rivers Flood of 1993 came to its peak.
On August 1, 2007, the Interstate -35 westbound bridge over the Mississippi River in Minneapolis came tumbling down during the evening rush hour, killing 13 and injuring 145.
