On January 1, 1735, Paul Revere, silversmith and patriot, was born, starting a long line of famous Americans born on the first of the year.
On January 1, 1773, the all familiar hymn “Amazing Grace” was performed for the first time at a church service in England.
On January 1, 1902, Pasadena, California hosted the Rose Bowl, the first college football “bowl” ever.
On January 1, 1950, a new method of designating what year it is (or was) went into effect with the BP system, meaning “Before Present.”
On January 1, 2013, the first marijuana “club” for private marijuana smoking (no buying or selling, however) was allowed for the first time in Colorado.
On January 1, 2016, we started a new year with the same hopes and expectations we normally start every year.
On January 1, 2017, we at History and Headlines have decided to live up to the “Headlines” portion of our name by re-capping the hottest fake news of last year!
On January 1, 2018, we take a fond look back at the tumultuous year of 2017, a year in which a remarkable number of prominent people got fired.

On January 1, 2020, a new year and the beginning of a new decade, we take a look back at the year we have just completed and examine some of the biggest stories of that year, including politics, war, crime, personalities, sports and whatever we feel like addressing!
On January 1, 2020, we wish all of our students and subscribers a Happy New Year!
On January 1, 2021, we take New Year’s Day to reflect on the fact that January 1st, although it is now celebrated as the beginning of the new year each year in virtually all of the western civilizations of the world today, is by no means the universal harbinger of a new year.
On January 1, 2022, we wish all of our family, friends, colleagues, students, and subscribers a Happy New Year, Bonne année, and Frohes neues Jahr!
On January 1, 2024, Dr. Zar, wished all of his family, friends, colleagues, students, and subscribers who were celebrating a birthday in 2024 the happiest of birthdays as well as a happy new year!
On January 1, 2024, we had some highly recommended resolutions that people really need to adopt to make the world a better place.
On January 1, 2025, we all took a bold leap into the future, a new year filled with promise and perhaps with some concerns as well.
