    A Brief History

    This article presents a chronological list of notable events that happened on February 28th.  For each date below, please click on the date to be taken to an article covering that date’s event.

    Digging Deeper

    On February 28, 1844, a steam powered, sail and propeller (screw) driven US Navy corvette, the USS Princeton, one of the newest and most modern ships in America’s fleet, was sailing on the Potomac River with a large retinue of US Government officials aboard including the President of the United States when she experienced one of those terrible maritime experiences we at History and Headlines call a “Naval Oops Moment.”

    On February 28, 1893, the United States Navy made an enormous step toward eventually ruling the seas by launching its first ever battleship commensurate with those of other great naval powers.

    On February 28, 1939, the Webster’s New International Dictionary, Second Edition accidentally included a goofy meaningless word among the thousands of legitimate words found in the esteemed text.

    On February 28, 1959, a Thor-Agena A rocket was launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, carrying a spy satellite designated Discoverer 1, the first in a spy satellite program of the American military and intelligence network.

    On March 1, 1986, the Prime Minister of Sweden was declared dead, having been shot by an assassin minutes earlier on February 28, 1986.

    On February 28, 1997, Hollywood was outdone by North Hollywood in a real life shootout worthy of the movies!

    On February 28, 2015, Black History Month drew to a close and as such we wanted to reflect on some notable figures in black history.

    On February 28, 2016, we covered the North Hollywood Bank Robbery of February 28, 1997.

    On February 28, 2018, we stopped to recognize those people that make us feel good about ourselves, the idiots that absolutely have to be worse people than we are!
