    A Brief History

    This article presents a chronological list of notable events that happened on January 14th.  For each date below, please click on the date to be taken to an article covering that date’s event.

    Digging Deeper

    On January 14th, medieval Christians celebrated Feast of the Ass Day, although perhaps not the type of “ass” you may be thinking of!

    On January 14, 1943, the Japanese Navy began their operation to successfully evacuate the remaining Japanese land forces from the Island of Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands of the Pacific Ocean.

    On January 14, 1950, the MiG-17 Soviet jet fighter made its first flight, a plane that would go on to become the 3rd most produced jet fighter in aviation history.

    On January 14, 1952, the Today Show, also simply called Today, made its debut on NBC television, the first daily morning television talk show.

    On January 14, 1967, San Francisco saw the iconic counter-culture event “The Human Be-In.”

    On January 14, 1973, the world was treated to Aloha From Hawaii, a concert televised across the world live, in 40 European and Asian countries, via satellite (a first), that was watched by as many as a one and a half billion music fans, making it the most watched televised concert by a single performer in music/television history.

    On January 14, 2005, the big budget Hollywood film, Alexander, starring Colin Farrell in the title role made its debut in Italy, after having opened previously in November of 2004 in the U.S.

    On January 14, 2020, while the world continues to digest the fallout of the US drone strike that killed Iranian Major General Qasem Soleimani on January 3, 2020 and the subsequent missile attack from Iran against an American base in Iraq, as well as the tragedy of the Iranian military accidentally shooting down a civilian airliner mistakenly thought to be an incoming American attack on Iran, we prefer to look at the more positive side of American-Iranian relations.

    On Thursday, January 14, 2021, Focus Features had a virtual screening of Promising Young Woman at 7:30 PM Eastern Time.
