A Brief History
On March 24, 2015, we ran a list of 10 “Patriots” Who Dodged the Draft or Did Not Serve, people that either enjoy the mantle of or are perceived to be “patriots” that failed to serve in the military during time of war. Some used BS excuses to avoid the draft, some used ruses, and some just did not serve. A name not found on that list of 10 is our current President of the United States, Donald Trump. Today, we add him to the list.
Trump serves as our Commander in Chief of the military, and has a habit of talking big bad bluster about all things military. Trump claims to revere our veterans and service men, but he used student deferments to avoid the draft during the War in Vietnam, and then used a questionable medical deferment for “heel spurs.” Of course, when questioned about this deferment during the 2016 Presidential campaign, Trump could not remember which heel had the problem. (Heel spurs do not go away on their own, a strong indication that he might be lying.)
This article makes no value judgement on Trump’s politics, and whether you agree or disagree with his stated goals and objectives to “Make America Great Again” is irrelevant to this particular topic. The fact is Donald Trump had every opportunity to serve his country during wartime and avoided it, at least legally and possibly also by subterfuge.
Question for students (and subscribers): Do you think someone who intentionally avoided service in the military during time of war should be eligible or ineligible to become Commander in Chief? Should someone unwilling to risk their own life for our country be allowed to decide if other young people are sacrificed in war? Please share your opinions on this subject on either side of the debate in the comments section below this article.
