A Brief History
On August 24, 2017, we take this opportunity to remind people that the police are not the enemy of a free people! According to the New York Post and as evidenced by the poster that was posted around Boston prior to the August 19th Free Speech rally, apparently there are some on the radical far left that include the Police in with “fascist” groups such as the Neo-Nazi’s and KKK.
Digging Deeper
The poster, created by an unknown source, but presumably some far left reactionary group, warns Bostonians to “BEWARE OF FASCISTS COMING TO BOSTON COMMON SAT. AUGUST 19th.” Pictured are several symbols of Alt-Right fanatic groups and included are 2 depictions of “Thin Blue Line” logos, an American Flag with a blue stripe in the middle and a rectangular blue bar with black bars above and below it. A similar anti-police flag incident apparently occurred at an earlier incident in Portland.
Unlike many other jobs, it takes little to get a police officer fired. Recently, even cops found not guilty of improperly shooting a perpetrator have been forced out of their job. Once a cop is fired, it is virtually impossible for him or her to ever get another police job, as agencies worry about vicarious liability should any future incident occur with that officer. In many cases, just doing their job and doing it properly has cost police officers tens of thousands of dollars in legal bills and ultimately their jobs and careers.
Police that break the law are usually treated much more harshly than the average person, and that is okay considering the high level of trust bestowed upon someone who is given a loaded gun and has the power and permission of the public to use that gun to possibly end someone’s life based on the police officer’s own judgement, a decision made under extreme stress and incredibly quickly. The uncalled for shootings and even felonious use of deadly force are a miniscule portion of the use of deadly force by police, and labeling all cops and cop organizations as “fascist” or lumping them in with right wing hate groups is ridiculous!
A major problem of misperception about our police forces is sweeping this country, fueled by radical anti-police groups that are driving a wedge between the police and the public. The “Ferguson Effect” where police are reluctant to pro-actively do their job and a sharp reduction in highly qualified candidates for police jobs is hurting the public. Do these anti-police types want cops to sit in the station and only answer calls like the fire department? Do these anti-police types want only losers that are not well qualified taking police tests, or do they want educated, healthy, well rounded and highly qualified people to form the candidate pool for police hiring?
It seems the United States is at a crucial point in Police-Public relations, and those spewing hate and bigotry toward the Police are NOT helping, but in fact are hurting the situation.
