Digging Deeper
Among our favorite movie franchises, the Jurassic Park offer the eye candy and action we love so much, and this latest edition offers both the visuals and the action in spades! With the pedigree of the iconic dinosaurs films, this edition would reasonably expected to be a blockbuster, costing $180 to produce and returning a highly lucrative $53 million in barely over two weeks at the box office.
British director Gareth Edwards earned his big screen chops with the likes of Godzilla (2014 and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) this experience shows in his excellent direction of Rebirth. Likewise, the cast does a fine job, especially the fetching Scarlett Johansson who is able to convince us she can be a serious badass. Rupert Friend portrays the greedy corporate villain to a T, the kind of executive we love to hate.
Special effects are quite convincing, with the only criticism we have was of the incredibly long and thin tails on a pair of amorous sauropods that kind of detrated from the scene. Some viewers and critics bemoan the slightly goofy appearance of the main dino villain, a sort of T-Rex with an off looking bulbous head, but that discrepancy is explained by the nature of the science that had been conducted on the island on which the action takes place, which was the creation of mutated and hybrid dinosaurs as the public had alleged grown bored with the originals.
Lots of action, lots of dino eating human scenes, and even some curse words might keep the youngest of most sensitive children out of the theater, but we believe anyone with any nostalgia for Jurassic Park will certainly enjoy this film as well, a definite must see for fans of the franchise.
Surprisingly to us, Rotten Tomatoes reports a critics’ rating of only 52% positive reviews, while the box off would indicate otherwise. We indicate otherwise as well, ranking this edition as better than the two previous films, though of course lacking the iconic nature of the originality of the first film. We believe you, too, would like the film and encourage you to see it in RealD 3D at the movies to get the most out of the viewing experience.
Question for students (and subscribers) to ponder: Did you see this film? If so, did you enjoy this film?
