Digging Deeper
We found Obsession an engaging, entertaining, and refreshingly novel take on the “You better be careful what you wish for” theme. The lead actress (Inde Navarrette) did an excellent job in particular. Although the audience chuckled at various points throughout the film, we overall found the film creepy, with a few jump scares and some startling vocalizations. The ending is a downer, although as always we refrain from explicit spoilers. The overall premise, while fictional due to the supernatural element, is still chilling in that there are of course real life incidents of people being infatuated with others in a non-reciprocal way. That aspect of the film was a main focus of our discussion about it on the ride home. The eternal question, “What would you wish for” if given the chance makes us sure sure to never wish upon a monkey’s paw or a genie, or in this case a wish stick. It just goes to show that whatever we may think we really want might not be ideal and even have dire consequences.

The film was plenty interesting and kept the audience glued to the screen, although at times events on the screen elicited a chuckle as if it was humorous, but at the same time what the overall series of events showed was quite unnerving given that there are indeed too many real people who become truly obsessed with others that we kept thinking of real life analogies.. Then, there is also the aspect of someone wanting something from someone else without their actual consent even if that is not what the other person wants. We pretty much discussed these themes for the whole hour ride back to Ashland and even a little bit after we returned home.
Running an appropriate 109 minutes, the R rating could easily have been sacrificed to being tagged with an NC-17 rating if a bit more gore had been included. As is was, special effects were spectacular considering the modest million dollar budget. Speaking of the budget, the stellar Rotten Tomatoes score of 95% is reflected in the projected opening weekend box office haul of around $10 million!
On another note, we were really impressed by the quality of the screen and the audio in the theater. It almost had a 3D-eseque, immersive effect, although it was not actual 3D, and the Dolby Atmos sound system was truly a worthwhile sound and vibration effect that makes the theater experience superior to merely watching the film streaming on your own TV.
Horror fans, make room this weekend or this week to take in this worthy movie, one that we heartily endorse!
