A Brief History
At the suggestion that Kim Kardashian deserved a spot in the History and Headlines’ series on women famous for being naked, the author paused. Yes, Kim’s first taste of fame was the result of the leak of her sex tape video, however, that had already been done by Pamela Anderson. To include Kim for this reason would mean that Paris Hilton and many others would have to be included as well. Instead, perhaps a list of people who have been on sex tapes would be more appropriate, but those are commonplace across the internet and need no further elaboration.
Digging Deeper
Then there are the nude magazine pictures of Kim for which she had purposefully posed. Her oil-slathered body on the cover of W Magazine, for which she also went full frontal, created quite an internet stir. And recently it was announced that she had once again posed for risqué pictures, this time for Love Magazine, and this time also smeared in oil and exposing her lady bits. Rather than making her even more famous, these pictures are a calculated move to bring her even more notoriety. Unlike fame, notoriety has a negative aftertaste as it is often achieved through scandal and shock value. But what more can one expect from someone so obsessed with her body that she enhances it and regularly posts provocative and hardly clad “selfies” of herself to her various Instagram followers.
It is very sad that a woman in her position of a wife and mother and at her age of 34 still feels the need to seek validation through exposing sides of herself that should stay private. It is also sad that at this stage in her life she feels her best asset is indeed her ass. At a time when many people self reflect and discover themselves, she decides to cater to consumerism and voyeurism rather than cultivate the sides of herself that she will hopefully retain once plastic surgery is unable to keep her butt from sagging anymore. Yes, it sounds cruel, but Kim has been taking and posting pictures of herself since her teenage years. What kind of personal growth has she experienced in the meantime to still be doing the same 15+ years onwards? Obviously, marriage and desire to be a good role model to her daughter did not inspire her to strive for more meaningful pursuits. Instead it is fame at all costs, with each new venture being more scandalous and shocking than the last.
And this is where it gets dangerous. The world is losing its sense of what is appropriate. How can women expect men to respect them when they do not even respect themselves? Young girls see that it is okay to enhance themselves, be artificial, expose their skin, be sexual; it is what will get them attention after all. The more the better; the boundaries have already been broken after all. So, what was once scandalous and shocking is not anymore. The human senses of decency and morals eventually acclimatize themselves to the status quo, and the resulting snowball effect means that the next undertaking has to be bigger and badder than the last to achieve the same response. That is exactly what Kim is doing; in order to stay in the limelight, she is constantly outdoing herself. But where does it end? How far will and can she go? And what will she have left when she cannot maintain her momentum?
This article is not meant to be a critique on Kim Kardashian; it is meant to give readers a moment to look at where society is and what the state of its values is. Kim Kardashian is only as popular as she is because society has allowed her to snowball to large proportions (literally). She is being fed and encouraged but with little regard to her emotional well being in the long run. For Kim’s sake, hopefully she will mature and not wake up one day to a huge void in her life that all her money or implants will not be able to fill. And saddest yet, young girls are emulating her and never develop a healthy sense of shame.
For now, since the author is not sure whether Kim is actually famous for being naked or simply notorious. Yes, the main criterion for being added to the series is whether the nudity was historically, culturally or socially relevant. This could be stretched to apply to Kim, but in her case, her nude antics are rather a sad reflection of the state of society.
