Ever since the Communists took over in 1949, the Chinese Nationalists that fled to Taiwan have claimed to be the legal government of China and the Communists have wanted to take over Taiwan.
Rumors of Chinese plans to invade Taiwan remain, with China boasting 1.4 billion people and a military of just over two million active members, the largest in the world. Taiwan has only 24 million people and a military of 170,000 active and 1.6 million reserves.
Taiwan is well armed and the island heavily fortified with modern weapons. China lacks sufficient amphibious capacity at this time but is improving its capability. The real question is not “if,” but “when” the invasion will come.
