A Brief History
On December 25, 1941, US Navy Admiral, later Fleet Admiral, Chester Nimitz arrived at the devastated Pearl Harbor Naval Base to take command of the US Pacific Fleet. Nimitz had been appointed Commander of the Pacific Fleet a week earlier and would go on to conduct an incredibly successful campaign across the vast reaches of the Pacific, overcoming great odds to defeat Imperial Japan and win the War in the Pacific.

Nimitz was also appointed as Commander in Chief, Pacific Ocean Areas, leading all Allied war efforts against Japan. US Army General Douglas MacArthur, later General of the Army, commanded the Southwest Pacific Theater, and often clashed with Nimitz over resources and overall strategy in the Pacific.
Nimitz, the grandson of a German seaman, graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1905, later serving on a variety of warship types, including submarines. Speaking German from childhood, Nimitz studied naval engines in Germany and pioneered refueling ships at sea.
Nimitz retired from the Navy in 1947, and later died in 1966 at the age of 80 from pneumonia. He had married and was the father of four children, including Chester Nimitz Jr. who had served as commanding officer of US submarines in World War II and the Korean War. Earning four Navy Distinguished Service Medals during his career, Nimitz ranks as one of the greatest American naval officers of all time.
Question for students (and subscribers) to ponder: Who is the greatest US Naval officer?
