Digging Deeper
Based on the 2015 interactive video game by the same name, Until Dawn is a sort of Groundhog Day film, where the characters, 20 somethings of mixed gender, are out in a remote cabin in the woods trying desperately to survive until dawn against supernatural forces.
The Groundhog Day aspect comes into play as a “time loop,” each time a character gets killed, they are resurrected to have another go at surviving until dawn up to a maximum of 13 times. What happens after 13 failures? Watch the movie and find out! Lots of tension, killing, and gore involved, sure to please most horror fans and fans of the video game, although the movie is not necessarily trying to exactly copy the game, just stay true to the spirit of the ordeal.
Directed by Swedish horror veteran David Sandberg, the 103 minute long film cost only $15 million to produce, and yet has gained a box office of over $45 million in less than a month. While the young cast has some credits in their respective resumes, the elder statesman of the film is Peter Stormare, a veteran of several major motion pictures and playing the same role he plays in the video game, that of psychologist “Dr. Hill,” the somewhat evil force behind the troubles experienced by the victims in the movie.
While earning only mediocre ratings from critics, we found the film to be entertaining and it kept our attention the entire running time. We recommend the movie to horror fans and fans of video games, but caution parents about taking pre-teens to a film that features so much violence and killing.
