A Brief History
While the US Department of Justice and numerous commercial entities wage culture war with the State of North Carolina about a state law recently enacted that requires persons of a biological or “birth” gender to use the rest room or locker room of the gender listed on their birth certificate, many other government entities from states to cities to school districts have gone the other way.
Digging Deeper
With recently announced orders to administrators to allow school children in Chicago schools (and other venues) to choose their own gender identity and use the rest room and locker room of their choice, anti-choice citizens are, in colloquial terms, flipping out! Without any sort of psychological or medical documentation, permission from parents, or written explanation, kids in selected places (such as Michigan and California) were given their own choice of not only which bathroom or locker room to use, but even which gender gym class to attend. To many Americans this development is shocking and defies “common sense,” what they consider protecting the tiny minority of transgender people in defiance of the will and protection of the majority. (Note: Inter-school sports are omitted from this order.)
President Obama raised the issue to a national scale when he announced on May 13, 2016 that such policy is now that of the United States and any public school district that defies his order would suffer Federal funds to be withheld. Conservative Americans are upset and even outraged by this announcement, though it is still too soon to know what form opposition will take.
People in charge, whether politicians or bosses or any sort of leader will inevitably find you cannot make everyone happy. (I found that out as a Marine Corps officer and Police supervisor.)
