A Brief History
On July 25, 2016, the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is set to begin, culminating in the nomination of Hillary Clinton as the Democratic Nominee for President, the first major party female nominee for President in the history of the United States. According to NBC News and The Daily Dot, this historic occasion is set to be marked by a “Fart In” protest by supporters of Bernie Sanders, the man Clinton beat for the nomination in a contentious primary and caucus process with charges leveled by Sanders that the DNC had sabotaged his run for the nomination in favor of assuring a Clinton victory.
Digging Deeper
Sander’s accusations were given credibility when it was revealed Wikileaks had hacked the DNC computer database and emails, and released thousands of documents and emails to the public, including damning and embarrassing correspondence between powerful Democrats that belittled Senator Sanders and his campaign and seemed to conspire against him in an unfair manner. An already upset contingent of Sanders supporters had planned “the world’s largest fart-in” by showing up to the Convention en masse, and after consuming mass quantities of gas producing foods (beans and the like) release their farts simultaneously during Clinton’s acceptance speech!
In any case, this planned protest is certainly a new disgusting low in American politics, but one many Americans, including the author, will find strangely appropriate.
Not many things would draw public interest to an otherwise predictable and boring event such as a political convention, but curious gawkers are sure to tune in just to see if the protest really “goes off.”
