A Brief History On February 9, 2018, we at History and Headlines take a moment to ponder the imponderable: Where do all these “National Days” come from? We found all sorts of references to February 9th being National Toothache Day and also National Read in the Bathtub Day, but no record of when or where these “holidays” started! Digging Deeper National Toothache Day is not so ridiculous as to actually celebrate having a toothache, one of the most painful conditions known to humankind (which can also be life threatening), but rather a day to remind people of proper oral hygiene.…

A Brief History On February 6, 2018, we stand with the United Nations in recognizing International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation. While normally we endorse the right of people to do as they please, horribly mutilating children without the informed consent of that child is not something people should be doing. The archaic practice of female genital mutilation is sexist and a form of abuse/assault on female human beings, sadly, still practiced today in at least 30 countries (but actually many more). A Brief History On February 4, 1999, New York City police officers shot an unarmed African immigrant 19 times (out of 41 shots fired), a horrible mistake we wrote about previously on our site. Digging Deeper On January 14, 2018, Clevelander Ronald Newberry, age 22, was pulling out of his own driveway when he was subjected to a hail of gunfire. Hit by 16 of the bullets fired at him, he somehow…

A Brief History On November 6, 2017, we follow up our article from yesterday about Presidents of the US and their smoking habits with an answer to a reader query about the status of women vis a vis smoking through the years.  At the end of the article we list some of our sources, and we would particularly like to recommend the bottom web site as a “must read” article for any woman or girl that smokes or is considering taking up the habit. Digging Deeper Historically, women have smoked less than men, but certainly not to the point of…

A Brief History On November 5, 2017, with President Donald J. Trump under fire from seemingly all sides (sometimes including us!), we take this opportunity to congratulate him on setting a fine example to the youth of America by neither smoking nor drinking alcohol.  Nor does he use illegal drugs.  Our previous President, Barack Obama, was criticized for being a smoker, a terrible example for impressionable youngsters that could conceivably chose to smoke with the excuse that, “Hey, the President does!” Digging Deeper Yes, Barack Hussein Obama smoked, although he tried to keep it out of public view and promised…
