A Brief History
On August 29, 2017, Southern Texas is reeling from the ongoing effects of Hurricane Harvey, and in times of crisis, you can bet you will find extraordinary people that step up to be heroes, and other creeps that show their true colors as zeroes. Today, we cheer the heroes of this past week, and jeer the zeroes. (Yes, we know we are using an 8 day week!)
Digging Deeper
1. Cheers: Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather.
McGregor, the current darling of MMA fans, sought the biggest fight of his career by challenging Mayweather, perhaps the greatest boxer for his weight in the history of the Sweet Science. Despite McGregor having zero boxing matches in his resume, he fought bravely and well against the incredibly skilled Mayweather for 10 rounds of a scheduled 12 round fight. Even when the referee stopped the fight, the game McGregor was eager and willing to continue. Mayweather proved his superiority by beating one of the toughest men in the world, despite being 40 years old. Both fighters were gracious after the fight and respectful of their opponent. Cheers to both of these guys for putting on a great show and being decent human beings, at least this week!
2. Jeers: Snoop Dogg.
This buffoon went on an Instagram rant denouncing the fine effort put on by Conor McGregor, dropping ‘F’ bombs and ‘N’ bombs throughout. Appearing to be high on drugs (Doesn’t he always?) this creep also posted videos of himself making dopey and crude comments about McGregor and the fight. If the UFC does not fire this scumbag from his Tuesday gig as “Snoopcast” commentary on Tuesday Night Contender Series, we will consider boycotting the UFC until Snoop is fired. Period.
3. Cheers: Lebron James.
By contrast to the vile Snoop Dogg, this basketball Hero tweeted congratulatory comments complimenting both fighters (Mayweather and McGregor) on their skills and putting on the great fight Saturday night. Some celebrities have class, such as Lebron, and some don’t, such as Snoop Dogg. Several other famous athletes and celebrities also made complimentary comments about the enormous effort both fighters poured into the epic boxing match. Cheers to those people as well.
4. Cheers: Derrick Lewis.
This MMA (UFC) heavyweight fighter lives not far from the areas flooded and devastated by Hurricane Harvey, and did his civic duty by rushing to rescue and help the people in those dangerous areas. Lewis, an African American man, also rescued a White man toting a Confederate flag! “I don’t care about that stuff, I just wanted to help him.” These are the words of a hero! See http://mmajunkie.com/2017/08/derrick-lewis-black-beast-saves-confederate-flag-toting-hurricane-harvey-victim for more information.
5. Cheers: Cajun Navy.
A group of boat owners from Louisiana formed as a rescue squad for flooding and hurricane disasters voluntarily took their boats to Texas to help with the rescue efforts due to Hurricane Harvey. Risking their property and their lives, these fine people are heroes to the victims of the disaster. Likewise, kudos to all the public and private individuals assisting in Hurricane and flood rescues.
6. Jeers: No Class Victims of Harvey.
Most victims of the massive Hurricane Harvey and the floods that came with it are grateful for the assistance and incredibly patient, helping their rescuers by being calm and cooperating to the fullest extent possible. Unfortunately, some of these victims are panicking, and showing their worst, most selfish side by literally shooting at rescue boats and helicopters that are too full to take on more victims. These impatient self-centered people have also tried to steal boats to save themselves at the expense of others. Wow, if these reports are true, these “victims” really are “zeroes.”
7. Jeers: Kim Jong-un and North Korea.
Despite recent strong condemnation for testing ICBM and other missiles designed to launch nuclear weapons, and being sanctioned by the United States and the United Nations, North Korea was back to their missile testing when they launched a ballistic missile directly over Japan into the Pacific Ocean, a highly provocative and illegal action, and its 4th missile test in 4 days. Kim, a short, fat, and incredibly stupid looking goof, executed an ex-girlfriend back in 2013, fed some his enemies (including relatives) to starving dogs, and seems to be as detached from reality as the nutty country he “leads.” We certainly do not need this “zero” starting a nuclear war!
8. Jeers: Cleveland Browns.
At the August 21, 2017 Monday Night Football game, a dozen Browns players knelt in prayer instead of standing for the National Anthem. While we think all Americans have a right to express themselves, we think people should behave in accordance with guidelines set by their employers while actively working for that employer and wearing the uniform supplied by the employer. That is the way it is for just about every other job in the country! Hey guys, you are entertainers, and disrespecting the flag and the country is divisive and belongs on your own place and time, not football games. What if a player decided to give the Nazi salute? Would that be free speech? Chew on that one.
9. Cheers: Cleveland Browns.
At the August 26, 2017 Browns vs. Buccaneers game, all the Cleveland Browns stood for the National Anthem (though standing arm in arm). This change of behavior showed respect for the feelings of other Americans, especially veterans, and possibly prevented a boycott of the team.
