On July 9, 1540, the marriage between Henry VIII and his fourth wife, Anne of Cleves, was annulled.
On July 9, 1850, US President Zachary Taylor died after consuming mass quantities of fresh fruit and iced milk at a July 4th fund raising and holiday celebration.
On July 9, 1903, the future leader of the Soviet Union, Joseph Stalin, was exiled to Siberia for three years.
On July 9, 1922, Johnny Weissmuller became the first man to break 60 seconds in the 100 meter freestyle swim, posting a world record time of 58.6 seconds.
On July 9, 1958, an earthquake (7.9 to 8.3 on the Richter scale) struck Alaska, shaking off a 90 million (long) ton block of rock and ice into Lituya Bay in southern Alaska, resulting in the biggest wave ever recorded.
On July 9, 1962, the United States Defense Atomic Support Agency and Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) launched a rocket from a remote Pacific Ocean island called Johnston Island (or Johnston Atoll), a rocket carrying a thermonuclear bomb (aka, Hydrogen Bomb) into space.
On July 9, 1979, the Renault automobile of “Nazi hunters” Serge and Beate Klarsfeld blew up outside their home in France, an unsuccessful assassination attempt by someone who did not want their Nazi hunting to be successful.
On July 9, 2011, South Sudan seceded from Sudan and became the latest new African country.
