The last Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev was the most important person on this list. He and Ronald Reagan all but ended the Cold War that I am a veteran of to a peaceful solution. Because of those two gentlemen the superpowers U.S.A. and U.S.S.R. buried the hatchet. And with that and the fall of Communism in eastern Europe during the Revolutions of 1989, a great monumental moment in the history of mankind was achieved.
Sad to say, the Cold War victory was thrown away. Wars became entertainment on TV, and Reagan died of the Alzheimer’s that had long plagued him and Gorbachev himself died in obscurity and a status of mock ‘respect’ in a rump Russia ruled by the fascist Vladimir Putin.
Reagan and Gorbachev both died in relative obscurity in their own lands, the great achievements they accomplished are all but forgotten. Fascism rose and gripped both lands and the general public in America and Russia have either forgotten about it completely and/or they just don’t give a DAMN.
Gorbachev may be nearly forgotten, but Reagan is revered as some sort of saint by many Americans. As a USMC intelligence officer, I predicted the breakup of the USSR, but even I was surprised it happened so soon and without any cataclysmic events to precipitate it. Yes, we blew the peace. I believe Putin and his buds are largely responsible for failing to integrate Russia into the family of nations.
