Digging Deeper
A reboot of the Silent HIll film franchise based on the video game, Silent Hill 2, from back in 2001, Return is taking the original premise of the haunted rural mining town in a slightly different direction with new characters. A lovelorn man seeking his lost love desperately in the nightmare title town, the alcoholic James receives a mysterious letter from his former love interest, Mary, urging him to “return to Silent Hill,” which of course he does, finding the ghosts and monsters from the game and first two films awaiting him.
With plenty of tension, horror, flat out fear and excellent special effects, fans of the franchise will quickly forget that this story line slightly diverges from the original, and viewers new to the franchise should be able to quickly grasp the concept of what is going on in this nightmare of a ghost town.
The release of the film found favor with audiences more so than critics who were less than effusive in their faint praise,, although the film did garner a respectable $43 million box office on a modest $23 million budget, a profit undoubtedly hurt by the extreme winter weather across the US during its January of 2026 release
As for us, we found the film entertaining and a worthy addition to the franchise, keeping our attention through the 106 minute run time and more than willing to go and see any further additions to this story. We recommend the film to both those familiar with the mythology and previous films and to those new to the story. The tension and terror might not be suitable for young or particularly sensitive movie goers.
