A Brief History
The media, reinforced by politicians on both sides has given the public the impression that there is some sort of war on Black males going on in the United States, especially by White police officers. Is this perception a case of “Dog Bites Man” (police doing their job) or a manufactured case of “Man Bites Dog” geared to arouse public passion and sell air time?
As an important note, before reading onward, please keep in mind that the statistics discussed in this article are about recent history, i.e. from the 1990s to the present. In the centuries before the conclusion of the American Civil War in 1865, an unknown number of black women were sexually abused and exploited as slaves by white men under appalling and inexcusable circumstances as covered in such articles as “10 Horrifying Facts About The Sexual Exploitation of Enslaved Black Women You May Not Know“. Again, while the article you are now reading is about current conditions in America, we urge our readers to not forget about the shameful history that preceded more recent times. We hope that ultimately, as a nation, we can understand what has happened historically, what is happening now, why these incidents have occurred, and most importantly what can reasonably and proactively be done to address these realities and diminish the instances of assaults committed on our citizens regardless of race or gender. Violent and sexual crimes against ALL people should be condemned.
Rather than throw around opinions, including our own, we prefer to take a look at real life statistics to see if there is a clue to this issue. For 2013 the FBI said for every million African-Americans less than 1 per year (.77) is killed by a white person. On the other hand, out of every million White Americans, nearly 10 (9.83) were murdered by a Black person. What a difference! Such a stunning mismatch should perhaps be news, but of course, for whatever reason it is not. In fact, for every Black person killed by the police or a white person, 40 Black people are killed by other Blacks, an outrage ignored by the media. About 98% of Black murder victims are killed by Blacks.
Taking this further, out of 520,161 inter-racial violent crimes in 2008, the FBI said 429,444 of them (82.5%) were committed by Blacks against Whites. With 14,000 sexual assaults by Blacks against Whites in 2007, the FBI did not report even one single case of sexual assault by a White man against a Black woman! That seems slightly one sided, although a more recent case shows that white on black sexual assault does indeed happen. See this article for more information.
According to Jay Stalien, as quoted in “The black cop who has a problem with ‘Black Lives Matter’“, “As of July 2016, the breakdown of the number of US Citizens killed by Police this year is, 238 White people killed, 123 Black people killed, 79 Hispanics, 69 other/or unknown race.” Some would have you believe that there is some kind of epidemic of white police officers killing black men, when in actuality of the millions of black men living in the United States, 123 is an incredibly small number, especially if one is trying to claim some kind of phenomenon is at play and when the number of white victims of black crimes is astronomically higher.
The Color of Crime” report, issued in 1999 but later revised in 2005, laid out a litany of additional “facts” about criminality:
“Blacks are seven times more likely than people of other races to commit murder, and eight times more likely to commit robbery.”
“When blacks commit crimes of violence, they are nearly three times more likely than non-blacks to use a gun, and more than twice as likely to use a knife.”
“Of the nearly 770,000 violent interracial crimes committed every year involving blacks and whites, blacks commit 85 percent and whites commit 15 percent.”
“Blacks commit more violent crime against whites than against blacks. Forty-five percent of their victims are white, 43 percent are black, and 10 percent are Hispanic. When whites commit violent crime, only three percent of their victims are black.”
“Blacks are an estimated 39 times more likely to commit a violent crime against a white than vice versa, and 136 times more likely to commit robbery.”
“Blacks are 2.25 times more likely to commit officially-designated hate crimes against whites than vice versa.”
Once again, at first glance, the above statistics seem quite condemning, but are they truly accurate? Please read here for criticism of the study and decide for yourself.
Okay, FBI statistics show decisively that Whites are not preying upon Blacks in any appreciable way, but what about the police? For 2015 the FBI reported almost 1000 people shot and killed by American police, of which only 90 were unarmed. Of those unarmed people killed by cops, 36 were African-Americans. (Other sources claim 25% or 26% of victims of police shooting death were Black.) That of course means cops shoot unarmed Black people at a higher rate than other races, but still, that means 60% of the unarmed subjects shot to death by police were non-black. These facts are not what the media or protesters would have you believe! From 1980 to 2013 Fact Checker reports over 2200 cops were killed feloniously (murdered) with White offenders accounting for 51% and Black offenders accounting for 42% of the murders. Considering the difference in White and Black populations, this means Blacks are several times (5 to 10 times) more likely to present a deadly danger to the police. In ambush type scenarios, 44% of cops killed were killed by Whites, 43% by Blacks. In fact, it would take cops about 40 years to kill as many Black men as Black men do in a single year!
Black men, comprising 6.6% of the US population, murdered 5531 people in 2012, while White men comprising 38% of the population murdered 4582 people. Make of these numbers whatever you want, but at least be aware of the statistics before you develop an opinion. Also remember, that as important as a free press is, you must always be aware of how information can be skewed.
